Basic overview
Do it for you
Just as drug “abuse” is not the same as drug “addiction,” what you do in “prevention mode” is not the same as what you do in “crisis mode.” All too often parents and even professionals overreact and take drastic measures when they aren’t warranted. If you are in prevention mode, there are some very good resources listed in this section for you to follow up on.
However, when dealing with adolescents and young adults, drug issues can catapult your family from prevention to crisis in the blink of an eye. For that reason, even if you are only in the prevention mode, we suggest that you stay informed by giving a cursory review of the rest of this site and review the resources we have listed here. in addition:
» Continue to answer the 21 Questions in The winning Hand (Free Downloads to the left) once a year for each of your children over the age of nine
» Drug test when appropriate
» Spend some time reviewing the Web-based information and help listed below
» Join at least one of the prevention organizations listed below to make a difference in your community and keep you involved in drug abuse prevention

Does your teen want to help their friends?
Make sure their "helping" isn't really hurting
Worksheets for teens who wnat to help their friends: It's very difficult for teens to help their friends because most forms of help look like they are "ratting" on them. Disloyalty to your pals is a huge no-no in teendomhood. So we must challenge to belief system of the young person in order to get them to question the expectations of their peers. We call this: Chanllenging the BS (Belief System). Parents, please take this worksheet and pamphlet, download and print out and give this to school counselor. It is distributed free from this site.
1. Pamphlet: Speaking Up:(181 kb's takes a few minutes to download) has a story of a best friend who killed a five year old on Halloween. Following the story is a worksheet for getting ready to speak up about your friends drinking or drug problem. There is space on the back to print local numbers for help such as AA, NA, Al-Anon or the school counselor.
2. Worksheet: Friendship: Challenge the BS: this is a two sided worksheet that helps challenge the belief system of what a real friend is. This allows a teen to draw the bottom line in relation to their friends when their friends are doing risky things.
