Overview

A summery of  the book: Sober Coaching Your Toxic Teen

This is the parent's manual in beta form, but has all the reproducible worksheets and handouts for both parents and family groups.

Shelly Marshall, the best selling author of this recovery classic (over two million sold) and the classic for young addicts, Young, Sober, & Free (Hazelden, over 250,000), along with her brother, Michael J. Marshall, PhD, are now offering an interactive guide for parents and caregivers in crisis with adolescent drug abuse. Consistent with the Teaching-Family Model for troubled youth, this new book, Sober Coaching the Toxic Teen, an interactive guide for teaching parents and primary caregivers how to manage a drug crisis), can be used by parents and caregivers or as an educational tool..

This is a quick information retrieval system and educational tool that instructs parents and caregivers exactly where to go and what to do in a crisis concerning drugs. It is not a prevention book. It is not a parenting book. It is not a lecture on what they should-have-done-when-their-child-was-young book.  Rather than alienate the parent/caregiver through admonishment or a lack of communication skills or hints of inadequate parenting, this book makes the parent an immediate ally of the treatment professional.  The principles behind the Teaching-Family Model draws them into the treatment plan as a facilitator of the solution—not the cause of the problem.

The authors deal with teenage drug addiction and frantic parents all the time, Ms. Marshall as a consultant and Certified Counselor and Dr. Marshall as a psychologist in private practice. Because of the lack of accurate and non blaming information available to parents, caregivers, and professionals regarding drug abusing youth, the authors perceived a need for a “parent friendly” response manual consistent with a Teaching-Family Model approach that stresses responsibility on the part of the adolescent and teaches the parent/caregiver to be an active participant in the solution.

Sober Coaching Your Toxic Teen is inteneded not only for parents but community support groups and for the therapist working with families in addiction. It contains all the instructions, worksheets and handouts in this 164 page workbook.

A Father writes in:

Into the "hole" or the "whole?"

I am the parent of a 20 year-old meth addict.  Just recently she has gotten considerably worse.  Just when you think they have crossed all the lines, there are new ones. Yesterday we came home and discovered the makings of a meth lab in our garage. (Iodine, peroxide, coffee filters and drano)  We are not stupid and when confronted she pretty much said she was sorry and asked if she was being thrown out of the house.  I feel like I'm dying here.  I went to some websites about "Toughlove" and they say they do not advocate throwing your children out, however, meth labs cannot go on at your home - the law can confiscate your property.  It's really not worth the risk.  At the same time I'm worried that I am throwing her straight into the HOLE.

Sober Coaching the Toxic Teen is a desperately needed tool because the truth about parents and their drug-abusing, drug-addicted, or alcoholic teens is not being told. It is needed because the books already available spend more time discussing parenting skills than instructing Mom or Dad how to escape throwing their child down that “hole.”  This book is brief, offers real-life, real-time solutions, reproducible worksheets for evaluation and education, and provides a basis for therapists and community support groups to teach the parent how to coach their teen to recovery.

What is the Book about exactly?

Sober Coachig the Toxic Teen

Sober Coaching Your Toxic Teen teaches parents and caregivers how to manage two types of drug crises: the young person who is addicted to mind-affecting chemicals or the young person who may not yet be addicted, but has precipitated a crisis involving drugs. Not all teens who use drugs are addicts, yet using any illegal substances put them at risk for all manner of tragedy including the loss of life.

This book is a management manual for the frantic parent and a resource for the professional to use with them. The reproducible handouts and worksheets are not only innovative, but important educational tools. This book is arranged so simply and clearly, that any panicked parent will be able to find the answers they need.  It is parent-panic friendly.

How can this book can help?

Of course we want our children to stop drinking and abusing drugs.  Sober Coaching the Toxic Teen will help jump-start the process with research-based interventions using the Teaching-Family Model principles of developing empathy, boundaries, taking responsibility, and recognizing thinking errors. This comprehensive resource provides a better understanding of a family member’s addiction so that we can chart an informed course of action.
